Building an inclusive future

New Music, New Voices

In the Mile High Freedom Bands, we believe music should reflect the full spectrum of who we are - our stories, our struggles, our joy. That’s why we’re dedicated to bringing new works to life, amplifying underrepresented voices, and creating music that speaks to and for our community. Every commission and premiere is more than just a performance, it’s a bold step toward a more inclusive, vibrant, and meaningful musical future.

NewMusic

Commissions & Premieres

Since 2016, MHFB has commissioned and premiered new works every year, ensuring that our concerts reflect the voices and stories of historically marginalized composers. In 2018, we launched an open call commissioning project to broaden our reach even further. We’ve premiered new music in every season since our 35th, and many of these pieces have since been published and performed beyond our own stage. Every composer we’ve selected represents a historically underrepresented community - making each premiere not just a performance, but a powerful statement of inclusion and pride.

Our next premiere is coming in the Summer of 2026. Read more about it!

Composers-in-Residence

Launched in 2024, the Composer-in-Residence program takes our commitment to new music even further, giving composers the time, space, and support to create bold, meaningful works in close collaboration with MHFB ensembles. This initiative empowers artists to experiment, refine their craft, and develop music that resonates deeply with our members and audiences. Our inaugural Composers-in-Residence - Amber Sheeran, Kalin Peña, and Sarah Platt - are working alongside our musicians to bring new, powerful stories to life. Together, we are redefining what it means to create and perform music that reflects the diversity and spirit of our community.

Empowering Voices

Every piece we perform is a chance to amplify stories that deserve to be heard. Through our commitment to new music and inclusive programming, we bring to the stage works that reflect LGBTQ+ experiences, cultural heritage, and the universal themes of resilience, pride, and joy. By centering historically marginalized voices, we ensure our music speaks to and for the richness of our community.
