Enriching The Community

 12/28/2011

Dear Friends and Supporters,

This year has been a busy year for the Mile High Freedom Band (MHFB) and we'd like to thank you for your generous support and interest during 2011. As the year winds down, we'd like to take this opportunity to consider the Mile High Freedom Band in your end-of-year charitable giving. We are 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that was founded in 1984.

With your financial support, we can continue to build a community for the purpose of developing a professional quality musical group. The Mile High Freedom Band is open to all who respect the diversities in life, including the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered (GLBT) community. Through performances and other activities, the Mile High Freedom Band provides educational, cultural and social enrichment for its members and its audience and makes a positive contribution to the community.

We are growing rapidly in both membership and recognition. Take a look below of our outstanding accomplishments for 2011!

In addition to our standard engagements with concerts, The Denver St. Patrick's Day Parade, Melodies of Pride, Denver PrideFest,
Cheesman Park 4th of July Children's Parade, and AIDS Walk Colorado, the Mile High Freedom Band launched two big projects in 2011 - a new musical ensemble and Halloween-themed variety show.

MHFB Freedom Swing band

A New Jazz Band - Freedom Swing
Our newest group is a big band ensemble playing a mix of swing band favorites and jazz standards. This year Freedom Swing performed at the Denver Lesbian and Gay Chamber of Commerce Awards Dinner and at the Denver Center for Performing Arts Holiday Party.  We are a huge hit and hope to add performances throughout the year.

A New Signature Performance

Spooktacular Spooktacular from MHFBThe band launched a new annual tradition of performing a variety show concert for the Halloween season: Spooktacular! Spooktacular! With singers, actors, and a special appearance by Boulder's own Miss Eda Bagel, this event promises to be the must-scream event of every fall!

Spooktacular! Spooktacular!, October 29
We produced our first "Spooktacular! Spooktacular!" in partnership with some of our friends from the community theatre scene and support from our friends like you! With the Spooktacular! event we had a live TV segment on "Colorado and Company" from 9NEWS, a featurette with Chris Parente of "Everyday Colorado" on KWGN-TV (He actually sat in and played french horn with the band!), coverage in both the Denver Post and Westword, OutFront, and our Artistic Director Rice Majors was interviewed by Bill Husted of the Denver Post and on KGNU radio their "Outsources" program. If you missed it - you can view tons of great photos on our Facebook page!

Members
The band increased by 21 members and currently have 55 active members.  Due to our tremendous growth, we are in need of additional instruments, including repairing the ones that have been donated to us. Please always keep MHFB in mind if you want to return to playing or have friends and famliy that once played. It is our goal to bring our community together through music. All levels of musical ability are welcomed in the Mile High Freedom Band. Current members come from a wide range of musical backgrounds, from those with music degrees to those who have picked up an instrument for the first time.

With your support, the MHFB can continue to grow and affect our communities in a positive way!
