Freedom Swing is the latest ensemble in Mile High Freedom Band, the largest LGBT band organization in Denver. Freedom Swing plays a mix of orchestra and jazz tunes you can dance to – with a partner.
The partner is key for MHFB’s LGBT audience. Freedom Swing has plans to give lesbian and gay couples a chance to come out and dance from a broader platform in Denver, said marketing representative Clark Vander Broek.
“There’s a whole swing community out there but it’s probably not as welcoming for folks who want to dance with their same-sex partners,” Vander Broek said. “We want to make sure people have an opportunity to do that.”
Freedom Swing rehearses weekly from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grant Avenue Community Center, a growing group that gets more players all the time, Vander Broek said.
Or if you just want to dance, look for a schedule of public performances from the group in the near future. In the mean time, the next chance to check out the players from the Mile High Freedom Band will be at Denver’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 17, on its route down Blake St. near Coors Field.
