Artistic Staff

Rice Majors joined the Mile High Freedom Band as Artistic Director in
September of 2010 and serves as the Principal Conductor of the concert band.

Rice previously conducted the West County Winds of El Cerrito, CA, the Rose
City Gay Freedom Band of Portland, OR, and the Ithaca Opera and Cornell
Savoyards of Ithaca, NY. He has also conducted the Pink Singers in London.
Rice has served on the board of directors for the Lesbian and Gay Band
Association, our parent organization. At the 2009 Inaugural Parade in
Washington, DC, Rice was proud to be Artistic Director of the LGBA's marching
unit.

Rice has a BA in Musicology from Cornell University and a Masters in Library Science from Emporia
State University. By day he is a Faculty Director for Libraries Information Technology at the University of
Colorado at Boulder.

Derek Hebert joined the Mile High Freedom Band in early 2012. He currently
serves as the Bandleader of Freedom Swing and as Assistant Conductor for
the concert band.

Outside of the band Derek is the Concert Orchestra Director and a K-8
general music teacher in the Mapleton Public Schools near Denver, Colorado. 

Since 1999, Derek has been an active marching band drill designer and has
written over ninety field shows for high school and collegiate marching bands
throughout the country. He frequently works with area marching bands as both a visual and music instructor
and as a leadership and conducting clinician.

Derek is an honors graduate of the University of Colorado Boulder with a Bachelor’s degree in
Music Education.
